Valley Community Council welcomed local residents on Saturday, May 24, 2025, to the official opening of the Basketball Court in Parc Mwd.
It was an honor to invite Kieran Jones, an international wheelchair basketball and athletics champion, along with his brother Ryan, also a top player in basketball, to cut the ribbon and open the court to the community. The two brothers were responsible for nurturing the idea of redeveloping the court in the first place.
Kieran said, ‘Sport has changed my life and it’s important that we start at grassroots level.’
The Chairman, Councillor Neil Tuck, said: “The basket ball court stands as a symbol of our community’s shared commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles. It reflects the vision of our partners, the generosity of our funders, and the hard work of everyone who helped bring this project to life. We hope it becomes a lasting space where future generations can grow their skills, enhance their well-being, and take pride in what can be accomplished through collaboration.”
He went on to express the Council’s sincere thanks to all stakeholders who made the project possible through their generous support — including grant funding from the National Lottery Wales’s Awards for All, the Anglesey Charity Trust, Welsh Water, and the Bro Llynnoedd Alliance. Special thanks were also extended to G L Jones, the project’s builders, and particularly to Lagan Aviation Infrastructure Ltd., who provided all the infrastructure free of charge as a gift to the community — a vital contribution that ensured the project’s success.
Kieran, Ryan, and Darren from Lagan Aviation received certificates for their valuable contribution and pride of the community.
Swish Coaching Ltd provided a coaching session for young players to promote interest in the game.
Councillor Ken Taylor added, “The Council is pleased to provide this resource for the community and looks forward to seeing others like Kieran and Ryan benefit from sport and play”.
The new Basketball Court will be launched officially at 1pm on Saturday 24/5/25 at Parc Mwd, Valley. Kieran and Ryan Jones will officially launch the Court and Sion Parry of Swish Coaching Ltd has arranged for 2 coaches and a team from Holyhead Celts (15 players) to provide coaching sessions for anyone who wants a go!
Refreshments will be available.
An opportunity also to have your say – everyone welcome!
